The Essex & Sussex – Restoring a Seaside Landmark

Home » Architectural Services » Historic Renovation & Preservation » The Essex & Sussex

Preserving the Jewel of Spring Lake’s Shoreline

Originally constructed in 1914, The Essex & Sussex began as the premier seaside hotel in Spring Lake, New Jersey. Known as “The Jewel on the Ocean,” the hotel quickly became a luxurious retreat for presidents, celebrities, and visitors seeking elegance along the Jersey Shore. In recent years, the hotel was transformed into the area’s only oceanfront condominium complex, continuing its legacy as a prestigious and picturesque residence.

Facing decades of exposure to coastal elements and aging construction materials, the building’s exterior and balconies began to show signs of significant wear. In 2012, the Essex & Sussex Condominium Association engaged Wallover Architects to assess and restore the building’s iconic façade and ensure its structural and aesthetic integrity for years to come.

A Legacy Restored

The Essex & Sussex renovation was more than a construction project—it was a mission to restore a beloved architectural treasure to its former glory. Through careful detailing and a deep respect for the original design, Wallover Architects helped revitalize the building’s grandeur while implementing modern materials and techniques to stand up to the demands of a coastal environment.

This successful renovation joins the firm’s growing portfolio of historic preservation projects along the Jersey Shore, including the nearby Spring Lake North Pavilion.
